Stemmy part 1

By Benjamin David

Page 1

Stemmy was bored

and a bit lonely too!

He lived down,

down,

down

in the earth

in a dark, gloomy room.

Thick lumpy bugs and fat squishy worms

Were the only friends he had

down there

in the dirt.

Page 2

So Stemmy would sleep

and dream crazy dreams

Dreams full of sunshine,

of birds

and the breeze

Dancing with the wind,

he’d wave to the sky

And to the man in the moon he’d yell “goodbye!”

But he’d awake

In his dark lonely den

Feeling a bit lost and forgotten again!

Page 3

But then

one morning

. when Stemmy awoke

He sensed something different

above and below.

All the way around him

and from side to side

He was beginning to feel

a warm cozy light.

It hugged him

and kissed him

and Stemmy tried not to cry

But he had never felt this loved,

warm

and dry!

He remembered his dreams

that he once thought were so crazy

And he wondered, could they be real?

Maybe?

Just maybe?

Page 4

The thin ray of light had come from above

And Stemmy thought

“Oh, if I can only reach up,

Maybe I’ll find

even more of that light

That lovely soft feeling

that hugs me just right!”

Stemmy stretched

and stretched

then he stretched a bit more

He stretched till every part of his thin body was sore.

But no matter how much

he strained

or he groaned

Still Stemmy remained

in his room all alone.

Page 5

“It’s no use!”

Stemmy cried.

“I’m just way too short!

I’ll never reach that light

if I can’t stretch anymore!”

It didn’t seem fair

Stemmy thought with a tear

Why must he stay all alone

way down here?

Stemmy was sad.

But then

He took a deep breath,

And smiled again.

Page 6

He wiped his tears.

And said to the light,

“At least you’re still here!

I think I’m alright.”

I’ll rest a bit now and

try again later

when I feel a bit taller

and maybe a bit braver.”

Stemmy fell fast asleep

exhausted and hurting,

he really wasn’t used to this much working!!

Page 7

THUD! THUD! THUD!

THUD! THUD! from above

Poor Stemmy awoke

and felt his own heart

THUD! THUD!

THUDding like it does

when you’re scared and alone

And neither mommy

nor daddy

or anyone is home!

What was that sound?

What awful danger was this?

Stemmy curled himself round

Around and around

Like this…

Page 8

But as quickly as it had come

It vanished away

And a bug crawling by said

“What’s up with you today?”

As the silence returned

To his brightening world

inch by little inch

poor Stemmy uncurled.

He had no idea what thudded above

but he remembered again

that warm feeling called love.

it gave him some courage

and he said with a grin

“Today might be

the day that I win!”

Page 9

The light and the warmth were

stronger than ever.

And when Stemmy looked up

he shivered with pleasure,

For now

just right above

his pokey head of green,

It seemed the whole world

was waiting to be seen!

Page 10

“Yes yes yes!!”

Stemmy shouted out loud

His big crazy dreams

were coming true now!

Again he stretched

and he stretched

and he stretched a bit more

The light was right there like a wide open door!

And then…

Page 11

with a snap

a swish

and a shiver

Stemmy popped thru the dirt

while his thin body quivered.

He shook as the wind rushed past his head

Bending him this way

and that way

and this way again!!

Stemmy gasped at the noise,

sights and smells all around

This was too much!

He really should go back down!

Page 12

THUD! THUD! THUD!

There came the thudding again!

Stemmy screamed with fright

and tried to descend

He curled tight his green body

not moving until…

slowly,

the thudding grew still.

Page 13

“They’re just people walking!”

Cried the breeze rushing by

“There’s no need to worry

and there’s no need to cry!

You’re just as safe up here as you were down below

And like everything else,

you can’t help but grow!”

Page 14

The light hugged him again

and the breeze tickled by.

Stemmy relaxed

and with a deep shaky sigh

He unfolded himself

and looked all around.

Was it really safe to be here?

Up here?

So high above the ground?

Page 15

There was a song in the air

And everyone there

Was singing their part

With all of their hearts

🎶“Welcome, welcome

Welcome to the world!

We’ve been patiently waiting for you!

Welcome, welcome,

Welcome to the world!

We’re so happy to finally meet you!🎶

Page 16

Stemmy couldn’t help

but right sing along!

He’d never heard it before

but you can’t sing wrong

if you sing with your heart

And if you just be you

You’ll find the right part

You’ll know the right tune

Right there

In your heart.

It’s you!

The birds were singing

as they flew overhead

And a bee buzzing by said

“I’ve been waiting for you friend!”

Even the Trees all

cheered,

waved and danced

And a fern right beside him

reached out her soft hand.

Page 17

Clouds in the sky

swept past with a rhythm

While the grass harmonized

like a great choir from heaven.

The river giggled

and chuckled

in its own special way,

While the breeze swooped above

and swished down

just to say,

Page 18

“Welcome little Stemmy

to your spot in the world!

It’s a magical place

we’re so glad you uncurled!”
